How the Invisible Load Calculator works
The full method, sources, and arithmetic — so every figure the tool shows can be checked line by line.
This page documents exactly what the Invisible Load Calculator counts, how tagged tasks become weekly hours, how those hours become a dollar value, and where the underlying numbers come from. It is written to be reproducible: a reader with the public source tables should be able to rebuild the same result.

1 · What the tool measures
The Invisible Load Calculator estimates the unpaid planning, household, and emotional labor one person carries in a household, expressed three ways: weekly hours by domain, a full-time-job equivalent, an annualized market ("replacement") value in dollars, and your share of the household load as a percentage.
You tag about 30 tasks across three domains by who owns each one and how often it happens. In solo mode you get one receipt and an estimate of your partner's load from the same tags; in couples mode two people tag the same list independently and the tool shows both receipts side by side, the hours gap, and the tasks both people claim.
It is an estimate, not a measurement of your specific week. It uses population-average time-use baselines, not a diary of your household. It makes no health, product, or diagnostic claim — it is labor-economics arithmetic on public data.
2 · The task taxonomy (30 tasks, 3 domains)
The list below is the exact taxonomy in the live tool. base_min is the baseline minutes per week at full ownership and "typical" frequency — the value used before your ownership share and frequency are applied. Two tasks are child-conditional (marked kids); if you tag "no kids at home" they are removed from the calculation entirely. Framing is deliberately non-gendered — the tasks describe the work, not who "should" do it.

Full-ownership grand total = 1,500 + 1,020 + 660 = 3,180 min/wk = 53.0 hrs/wk — the theoretical ceiling if one person owned everything at typical frequency. With no kids at home the two child-conditional tasks (m03 + h06 = 270 min) drop out, lowering the ceiling to 2,910 min = 48.5 hrs/wk.
3 · The hours model
Each tagged task's weekly minutes are its baseline scaled by two multipliers:
task_min = base_min × frequency_multiplier × ownership_shareA task tagged N/A (or left untagged) is dropped — it contributes nothing and is removed from every denominator, including the load-share split.
Who owns the task sets your share of its minutes (and, symmetrically, your partner's):
How often the task happens for your household, relative to the typical baseline. It defaults to Typical, so the tool produces a full result even if you only tag ownership:

Internal math uses raw values; only the displayed hours are rounded to the nearest 0.5. The three shown domain figures always sum to the shown total, so the receipt reconciles exactly.

In solo mode, partner_hrs is an inverse estimate from your own tags (a "Shared" task adds 0.5 to both sides; a "Partner" task adds fully to their side) and is labeled as an estimate. In couples mode it is your partner's own answers, not an estimate. A share above 65% triggers a gentle rebalance nudge; a share at or below 35% shows the symmetric "your partner carries most of it" framing.
Both partners tag the same visible task set from their own point of view. For each task the two self-reported ownership tags are combined:
- Both tag "you own it" → the task is contested: it is split 0.5 / 0.5 between the two totals and added to the "tasks you both think you own" list.
- Otherwise each person receives the share implied by their own tag (You 1.0 / Shared 0.5 / Partner or N/A 0.0 on their side).

4 · The blended-wage derivation, step by step
Weekly hours become a dollar figure through a replacement-cost logic: what would it cost to pay someone the going market wage to do this work? The rate is a single blended hourly wage — a weighted average of the public BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OES) national mean hourly wages for the six paid roles this unpaid work maps to.

sourced The per-role mean hourly wages are BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) May 2025 national, cross-industry means (data.bls.gov/oes; pulled August 2026), and the resulting $22.86/hr blend is their weighted average. The six weights are locked; the blended wage is Σ (weighti × mean_hourlyi).
Take a receipt of 37.0 hrs/wk (domains 18.5 + 11.0 + 7.5 = 37.0):

Reverse check — recover the wage from the annual figure:

And the full-time equivalent and share, from the same receipt:

Every figure the tool shows is derived from these same steps, so the hours, the dollar value, the FT-equivalent, and the share all reconcile with one another. The annual value is computed from the displayed total (hours rounded to the nearest 0.5), so displayed hours x 52 x wage equals the displayed annual figure exactly and is rounded to the nearest $100 only for display.
5 · Sources & limitations
- Time per task — BLS American Time Use Survey (ATUS). The
base_minbaselines are allocations derived from public ATUS averages for household activities: cooking, cleaning, laundry, caregiving, household management, and purchasing goods and services. The domain sums (1,500 / 1,020 / 660 minutes) are design targets held within a tight band of the published means. - Dollar value — BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OES). National mean hourly wages for the six SOC roles above, combined with the fixed weights into the blended replacement wage.
- It is an estimate, not a measurement. The tool models your load from population-average baselines and your own tags — it does not observe your actual week. Two people who tag identically get the same number regardless of their real households.
- Sourced vs. sample values are labeled as such. The $22.86 blended wage is sourced (BLS OEWS May 2025 national means, pulled August 2026 — see the table above). Task-minute baselines remain ATUS-derived design targets and stay labeled "sample" until each source cell is pulled from the current ATUS release and published here with its pull date.
- Replacement wage is one framing. Valuing unpaid labor at market replacement rates is a common, defensible method, but it is not the only one (opportunity-cost and other approaches yield different figures). We chose replacement cost for transparency and reproducibility.
- Solo partner load is an inference. In solo mode the partner's hours are estimated from your tags alone; only couples mode reflects both people's own reporting.
- Baselines are U.S. averages. Frequency helps you adjust, but the model is not calibrated to any one region, income, or household structure, and it makes no clinical, financial, or product claim.
The purpose is to make invisible work visible in familiar units and to give an honest, checkable starting point for a conversation — not to deliver a precise audit of any single household.
